Help! My 3 year old won't stay in bed, he is scared of monsters and screams when I leave him

Up until a few weeks ago my son who will be 3 in a few weeks was brilliant at going to bed. His routine has not changed but all of a sudden he is scared to be left in bed alone as he thinks there are monsters in his room. I have tried to tell him monsters are not real and they are only in story books. I pretend to put a magic invisable cloak on him at night to protect him which doesn't really help. He has a stair gate on his room as i worry about him falling down the stairs at night (a stair gate does not fit safely at the top of the stairs) but he now climbs over it and knocks on our bedroom door in the middle of the night. We also have started to leave the landing light on through the night as again i worry he could fall down the stairs, particually during the night if its dark. Two nights ago when i went into him crying he was actually shaking, he was so scared as he thought there were monsters. My husband and i are not getting enough sleep as we are awake in the night and actually getting him to bed and asleep can take a couple of hours. I don't know how to deal with this and get him back into a nice calm routine of going to bed. Please does anyone have any advise. Rachel

my 8 year old used to do this when he was little and rather than tell him there were no monsters just in books, I would make a big deal about checking his room. I put him to bed with the light on, then I would say right let's check this room for monsters. the first time I think he thought I'd lost the plot but I would do it every nigjt. under the bed, in the wardrobe, in the toybox behind the teddies. then I could kiss him good night and say there's no monsters in here baby. if he woke up on the night I would remind him I had checked already but give the room a quick once over to be on the safe side. eventually he grew out of it but it took a while and this seemed to comfort him.
