Help! No one in our house is sleeping!

For a week now, my almost 2-year-old has not been sleeping through the night. His bedtime is 8, he no longer naps, and I try to wear him out. No matter what I do, he's up around 1...sometimes he'll make it to 3...and he's impossible to put back down. I've tried letting him cry it out, to no avail. I don't take him out of his room, and have even spent 2 hours in there with him to try and get him back to sleep. He has no teeth poking through right now, and I can't think of any reason for him to be acting like this. He's now even resorting to sleeping on the floor! My father and boyfriend are getting little sleep, though averaging 3 or 4 hours a night, I think I get the least amount of sleep of all of us. I'm desperate for a full 7 or 8 hours here. Why is he doing this? And better yet: how can I make it stop!?

I think this has become a habit for your son. There is no reason for him to wake up at this time. Tonight when he wakes go in do not give him eye contact or talk to him. Make sure there is nothing obvious that has disturbed him and lye him back down and leave. Let him cry for about 10 minutes or so and do the same. No cuddles no fuss just in lye down and out. He will not like this as you are ignoring him. Do this every time and he should learn that getting mummy up is not fun anymore. This method usually takes three days to work fully so be prepared to have little sleep. Try and get somebody to have your son for a few hours in the day so you can get some sleep. Just make sure also that you have wind down time before bath and then bed. Try and read or let him watch a calm programme on the tv no excitement. This helps the mind to relax and gives you a better chance of an extended sleep. God luck sleep deprivation is horrid, but he will stop eventually.

By what you have said it sounds like he is sleeping 5-8hrs a night and I have read that Dr's consider that through the night... have you tried adjusting bedtime?? Earlier or later and see what works for him! Good luck and hope you get some rest soon.

Thank you Louise. We usually have a pretty good bedtime routine. He falls asleep with little or no problem. He just wakes up at night all the time. Last night he was up for two hours! Thank you so much for your advice. I'll try the 10-minute intervals tonight.
