How do I get my 2 1/2 year old to stop sucking her thumb?

My daughter has been sucking her thumb since she was a few weeks old. At first it seemed harmless, now she is 2 1/2 and her thumbs are raw and sometimes she complains that they hurt.

I've tried putting pickle and lemon juice on them thinking she might not like the flavor and stop and it back fired because she loves them both.

Any idea's?!

My son sucked his thumb and carried a blanket with him untill he was 5. We asked him in Pre-K when he would stop and he told us he would when he went to Kindergarten and he did. I am not sure if this works with every child but it did with mine. I have a child older than him and I took his pacifier away from him when he was 2 and it was devastating to him.

My 3rd little boy used to suck his thumb as well. I noticed his thumb swelling and getting sores on it. At night I would wait untill he would fall asleep and then stick a pacifier in his mouth and a sock on his hand. As long as he had a distraction from the thumb and a substitute thumb (aka pacifier) he was fine. The only downfall is he is now addicted to the pacifier. The bright side is that the sores are gone. It did take about a week for him to stop thumb sucking.
