How do I get my 22 month old to stay in bed for his daynap and bedtime?

My 22 month old has gone from being the perfect sleeper to thinking it is great fun to keep getting out of bed. We just put him straight back in and tell him it is bedtime but the other night, it took us 3 hours to get him to sleep. Sometimes it can take up to an hour for a nap. When we shut the door, he just goes hysterical. Any bright ideas?

When I first got my daughter sleeping in her toddler bed she dd the same thing. She would bang on her door and pitch a royal pitch for a good while. At first I would go in and try to lay her back down. After a few times of doing that I realized that wasn't working so I just let her stand there and scream for a few. It didn't take her long to figure out that it was bedtime/naptime and she wasn't going to get up. Now she usually goes to bed without a problem tho there have been times she will sit in her room and play for a lil bit before laying down and actually falling asleep. Good luck to you with your little one.
