I have a 22 mth old and when hes done or doesn't want his plate he usually throws it or just the food on the floor. How do I get him to not do that! Sometimes he will hand me his plate but will still try and throw food off of his tray.

If I figure it out, I'll let you know. My son is 27 months and does the same. I have tried multiple things: kick dogs out of room (they're fun to watch eat), ignore him, a quick "no" and take his plate away. same "no" with a hand smack. I have told him repeatedly that food stays on the table (ideally his mat) if he doesn't want it on his plate, which sometimes he will do. He can also say "all done" and I will take it away, but he rarely chooses to do so.

Lately, I think he is throwing for the attention. Maybe he likes to make the pouty face after we yell at him? If he's practically done, I take the plate, put him on the floor and ask him to pick up every piece. If he has just started a meal and I am pretty sure he will eat it, I will leave the room and clean up the kitchen (can still see him). He usually eats and throws little after that point. After he is done, I have him pick up all the food bits.

I only very recently started the ignore + he picks up the bits, but I think that will work. For my own sanity (and b/c we have carpet) I only serve him dry cereal or cereal moistened with milk but with the excess poured out so there isn't milk all over.

Good luck, it's a process!

my son did that once or twice and I would tap his hand and point at him and say no firm, and he dosen't do it anymore
