Oh, and don't worry about wanting candy forever.  Mine forgets about it now almost all the time, and maybe remembers once a day if even that that he should get a "sucker" (and usually then its for a number two instead of a number one).

Don't fret.  Every child is different and train at different ages.  Forcing the issue when they aren't ready will only make things more miserable for you especially.  My son is 3 1/2 and just now really getting the potty in the last month.  I had a lot of trouble getting mine to train until I took away the pull ups.  He knew they were diapers and as long as he was in them, he wouldn't even try to go to the potty.  I tried the reward chart and it was really useless for my son but some people have great success with it, I finally instituted a reward program of those little dum dum pops you can get a huge bag of for cheap.  (He doesn't ever get sweets so it was a real treat to get candy when he went potty).   Then, I put him in underwwear and took away the "diapers".  Its been a rough couple weeks of reminding him to go but he's finally going with minamal accidents now.  Watch for the cues, such as real interest in the potty and staying dry all night, but if, like mine, the interest isn't there, it won't do much good no matter what you do and even if you have success there may be regression after some successes.  Hope it helps you hon, but don't worry, he won't be five and not potty trained!  It will come when he is ready!  (or she for that matter you didn't say if it was a boy or girl).

Hi Amy,

I have a 35 month old and he has only just started using the toilet, but my 23 month old is coping, thank god. but how i did it was, some call it a reward system, i call it bribery.  buy a bag of there fav chocolates or lollies, you know the big party mix bags, and everytime they go give them one, then slowely ween them off, my boy just forgot so if he didnt ask i didnt give him one, but he kept going. so try that one, hope it helps
