How do you stop biting? Why do toddlers do it?

My son bit me twice. After the second time he never did it again because I bit him back. I was in a doctors surgery and everyone looked at me like I was so terrible but he has never bitten me ever again.

Your child bites because it feels good. Its a way to assert what they want and to show displeasure or pleasure in a situation.

I did the same thing...but just be aware that when childern are biting them selves it can be a form of early self mutilation

Quoting Amanda:

What I did with my son is pretty basic and simple. The first time in one day if he would bite me I would bite him back on the arm just enough for him to feel it, get close to him, a few inches from his face with a serious stern look and tell him "biting hurts, you don't bite people!!!" and set him down in a chair for a one min time out. If he would do it more than once in a day I would gently tap him on the lips, tell him the same thing and sit him in the chair for a 2 min time out every single time he did it. It stopped in 2 wks with consistant and persistant reinforcements.

I did the same thing, and it worked.  Bite the little one back (not hard!), just enough so that they know what they did hurts. Make sure you get down to their level when you tell them "it's not nice to bite because it hurts the other person". Be consistant! (and have patience or course)

now just sit back and wait for all the comments saying it's child abuse LOL
