How to block a small stairway?

We have our daughter's "big girl bedroom" all set up and we want to transition her to her real bed this month. We got her a really cute bunk bed with a built-in stairway - not a ladder - to the top bunk. If you can imagine, it basically has a solid plywood sheet on each side of the stairs, with one side of the stairs near the corner of the room and the other side touching the beds. Now the problem is that we're afraid to let her sleep in there unless we can block the stairway, so she doesn't climb up to the top bunk and jump off at night. The stairway is only about 24 inches across, so it's too narrow for the baby gates we've seen.

Can anyone recommend a good way to block the stairs, for the next year or two? Something that she can't pull off or climb over? If we could remove it easily that would be cool, but I'd be willing to block them off completely for a while. I'd prefer something that doesn't look ridiculous, but I'll take any ideas. :-) We've been stumped about this for weeks!

you could cover the entrance with a piece of wood and then fill the stairway with stuffed animals.

You could cover the entire stairway with a piece of plywood, if you don't mind screwing it in place. To make it pretty, you could cover the plywood with a girly fabric and decorate it somehow with anything that matches the theme of her room.
