I have an almost 4 year old and an almost 2 year old. My husband's and my parents and grandparents went absolutely nutty with Christmas gifts and I am wondering how you all make room for all the new stuff. I have already donated or tossed 4 garbage bags full of their old toys. I do this before Christmas every year to try to make room, but this year I still am gonna be cramped for space in their room (they have to share and we don't have a spare room). How do you all keep your kids' toys organized so that they can help to keep them tidy??? I have things where they can't reach and stuff gets put away in ways that seem to be too difficult for my kids to manage. A toy box is nice, but I find they don't play with anything in it cuz it's impossible to find anything in there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know what it would cost to ship something but you could always order online from IKEA and have it shipped to your house if there is nothing near by...

I, like Shannon, have different toy boxes for different toys: cars, trains/tracks, figurines, kitchen toys, etc. 3 fit under our living room table, 2 in the bedroom, & the bathroom has its own toys... however my husband HATES how many toys my son has and as soon as I can get some of the clothes boxes out of his room (when his brother grows into & out of them) I have to move the toys to the bedroom :(

Not that this will help in the short term, but you can start asking people to give books, movies, or event tickets for gifts! By event tickets I mean they could get prepaid tickets to the zoo, a children's museum, or those children's gyms that are popping up all over? Or maybe a membership to something like that and that way they can have fun all year instead of just xmas :) Good luck!!!

Quoting Lorie:

At Ikea they have a toy box that looks almost like a book case but it fits all these different size bins in it. It holds 5 or 6 bins. You can buy small bins for little things and big bins for the bigger stuff.
I love it and its a great space saver. Its call trofast toy bins { I think thats how you spell it }. Go on their web site and check out the children's part.
good luck

That looks amazing. I like that it is sturdy enough to use for seating and playing ON (when properly affixed to the wall of course).  I wonder if they have anything like that nearer to my home. I think the nearest IKEA is like 3 hours from my home.

This is a tough situation cause toy boxes are ingenious but also rake havoc when the kids can't find anything.. we organize cars with cars, men with men, legos with legos, etc... we always put toys away in the top of a closet or under a bed and bring it out when the children get really bored so they have something "new" to play with. the attic is a good source... or closet or under your bed... hope this helps... oh and when you teach them to clean their room, it's nice for them to put everything where it belongs so this is a great idea in my opinion!
