I am afraid the only way to do this is to exercise tough love supernanny style. may be decorating his room again in images that he likes and letting him have a choice in his decor will entice him to stay in his room. Also buy him a bear that is going to keep him safe from any monsters and make a big thing of him being a big strong bear. When it comes to bed time tell him that bear will look after him and now it is time to be brave and sleep in his bed because he is not a baby any more and mummy needs her sleep. Be prepared this will probably take about three nights before your son gets the idea that he will be sleeping in his room from now on. He will get out of bed time and time again, just take him back and give him the bear and leave, do not loiter just leave. Do not give in. I know it is hard but keep going. By night three he will give up and sleep in his own bed and you will be rewarded with a nights sleep. Co sleeping is really hard to get out of and so easy to slip into. Stay firm with him and always put him back to bed in his bed it is a battle so be prepared to get some help in the day should you need to sleep. Just remember it is not a quick fix but if you can stand firm the quicker your son will be more independant.

I agree with Louise, try a bear and say he is to watch over him. Doe he prefer the closet door be open or closed? Maybe get a light for his closet so he can see that there is nothing in there. Maybe be fun about it and charge in there and act like your beating up the "monster" and come out all victorious and say that there is nothing to fear now. Hope you get your bed back soon.
