lemon juice and get a "Thumbuddy To Love" teaches kids that growing up is fun and comes with a thumb puppet. Google kids loved it!

i used to put something on the thumb that tasted bad, lemon juice worked the best. not too much, you are not trying to harm them just make them think it tastes bad. thumb sucking is a hard habit to break. its not like a pacifier or blankie that you can take away. good luck :)

How old is your little one? I have a 4 year old who sucks his thumb, and at his first dental appt at age 3 and 1/2, the ped dentist recommended adhering a "device" (or "cage") to the front of his teeth to prevent the thumb sucking. In my 4 yr old's case, his 2 front teeth are severely crooked from the constant prolonged sucking. Recently, he had a bad fall and hit both teeth knocking them loose, so no "device" will be installed any time soon, but his dentist has talked to him about not sucking his thumb so those teeth tighten up again. He's improving... usually only doing it when he goes to bed, in the car, or watching TV. Generally, though, I have heard that once they start school, they will stop doing it. In my son's case, he does not do it at school (according to his teacher), but does still do it at home... go figure... ;) Getting their hands busy doing something also helps. My 4 year old loves to string beads and make necklaces... you can decide how large of beads you want to use depending on your little one's age. Good luck! Wish I had the magic answer!
