My son recently went through a state where He wouldnt sleep. So I took him to the dr. and they gave me clonidine. Now I am no expert but couldn't that do harm to my son being on a pill to help him sleep? I mean he is only going on 2 years old as of next month. I am nerves on giving to him. Now I know what everyone must be thinking when I say he wasnt sleeping but I really have to explain a little. He was going to bed at like 2 or 3 am refusing to go to sleep all night.... then he would wake up at like 8 am. And he was always cranky and looking run down. Did I do the right thing I mean letting them put him on meds to help him sleep?

the meds are a short term solution, to help you through, has he always slept like that? my friend son had to be held screaming and kicking until he fell asleep and then would only sleep 2 or 3 hours, he was on the go all day and would hardly sit down, he was diagnosed with adhd at 4, and then when she got help he started to calm down once he was being treated for it, dont let people frighten you, you should have an appointment to go back to docs to discuss this, explain your worries talk to your health visitor se if there is anything you can do during the day to help night time, have a routine of bath story then bed-if he not going down until 2 try starting it at one, after bath no tv or loud music, play kids lullabys and talk quietly, so he has to be quiet to listen etc after a week or so then move back and start at 1230, lying watching starry prjector in the dark or soft light calm kids down and while they may not be sleeping they will be resting. no harm in trying, good luck and remember what is or isnt right for some one elses child doesnt mean the same for you, you know your child so try everything but give it at least a week before you give up on it

I would not go with the clonodine because he is so little and you never know what can happen with drugs and toddlers, but go to your health food store and ask them about triptiphan it is what is in Turkey that makes you tired my friend had the same issues with her daughter and she only used it one night and with an hour her baby was drowsy but because it is all natural it will not be unhealthy for the little one.

CONGRATS ON BEING A MOTHER. YOU ACTUALLY DID WHAT YOU THOUGHT WOULD HELP YOUR SON.THE ONLY THING I THINK THAT REALLY BOTHERS YOU IS THE FACT THAT THE MEDICINE COMES IN A PILL FORM.I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE GAVE THE BABY LIQUID BUT I'M NOT A DOCTOR SO I REALLY DON'T KNOW.YOU DID THE RITE THING BY FINDING OUT WHY YOUR CHILD WAS NOT SLEEPING THROUGH THE NITE. HOPE THAT EVERYTHING IS OKAY NOW.

I agree with Herli on that one. Play with him until he gets tired. My son is going through that same stage and he is 11 month. But than again mine is teething and he is always either being a drama king or just being plane stubborn.

I agree with asking for a second opinion, maybe from a specialist. (usually I get recommendations from my daughter's school/therapists who work with her on a regular basis) Medication may be the way to go, and it may not. But it wouldn't necessarily be a first resort unless you've exhausted other options.

please don't give any medication to put your child to sleep, my mother's friend has a boy who was given pills to make him sleep and now he has mental retardation because of the pills.
Consult with other pediatricion, maybe he feels something uncomfortable with his body or his environment. My 2 years old also sleeps very late, he sleeps at 11 or 12 PM.
When he was 1 year old, he slept at 2 or even 3 am and woke up at 6 am. I tried everything to make him sleep, cradling, feeding him milk, patting his back etc, nothing worked. Now, I don't do anything, I just leave him in his crib and he will fall asleep by himself.

My son didn't sleep for a while, he grew out of it when I stopped giving him attention. I left him in his bedroom sat at the top of the stairs and left him to cry. he had a stairgate on his bedroom door so I can hear him downstairs and to keep him out the bathroom. but now he sleeps fine, other than the odd days that he lays there and talks to himself. hope i helped :)

If you are questioning your decision, you may want to ask for a second opinion. Your pediatrician shouldn't be offended. You can also ask about homeopathic methods for aiding your child in sleeping. Additionally he may be suffering from Acid Reflux or another biological issue that is keeping him from sleeping. I too, would be wary, of putting my child on medication to make him sleep.
