Hi Rebecca,

There are so many reasons why a child may not be walking so I would hate to even try to guess.

I have a background in Early Childhood Development and have worked with families with special needs children in a program called Early Intervention. This is a program that is  available nationally, however it's structured a little different in each area so I can't tell you exactly how to access it.  What this program can do is a developmental assessment of your child with a multi-disciplinary team (i.e. educators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, etc).

My recommendation is to talk with your child's doctor about your concerns and ask him/her if this program might be worth looking into based on what the doctor is seeing.  Chances are your doctor can help you connect with the program, but I have seen some doctors who are more on the wait and see kind of approach, so my further recommendation would be to go with your gut. If you are going to need to seek resources on your own then I would contact your local school district (probably the Specialized Services Dept) and ask them for details. This is also a program that is typically free or very low cost so don't be frightened by that prospect either.

Please don't take my recommendations to mean that something is wrong as there are plenty of children who are late walkers and just fine, but I am a proactive person who has seen that early interventions (hence the name of the program I am recommending) do work. It always breaks my heart to see situation where, for what ever reason, people waited and they issues compounded themselves.

I wish you and your family the best,

Maria
