Is my son's 4 year old behavior normal?

We have a 4 year old son adopted from Guatemala. We also have a 2 year old biological daughter. Ever since turning 4, he has been so rambunctious, impulsive, and generally just kind of rough. He is a sweetheart though, but just seems like he has more energy than he knows what to do with. He is in swimming lessons, plays outside all the time, and rarely even plays with toys or watches T.V. I know he's also a boy and boys are this way, but I get nervous that something else is going on. He does well with charts and currently we have one on the fridge for soft hands with his sister (this has also been an issue) and listening the first time. I am a second grade teacher (as well as former kinder teacher) so I know all of the techniques and I swear, I've tried them all. We love him so much, but his constant energy is about ready to kill me!! Ideas?

Hi there. I have a boy and a girl - and I felt the same as you, there was such a difference between the two, still is. My boy is 4 years old and I have to get out with him most days so he can run off that extra steam! I found this book "Raising Boys: Why Boys Are Different - and How to Help Them Become Happy and Well-Balanced Men" By Steve Biddulph - really helps you understand how different they really are! Take care, Helen

It is VERY normal. Boys get their first boost of testosterone at around 4 years old. Aggression, extra energy, unruly behaviour is all normal. Just keep up the physical activity, it will help to burn some energy and to get rid of some of that frustration. It will settle down :)
