Melatonin and Magnesium Oil For Toddlers

I am a mom to a 2 year old girl who does not sleep. She has always been that way. We had a stretch of about 2.5 months when she was 6 months old when she slept well, but that's about it. So something has got to change. We have talked to the pediatrician and thank goodness there is nothing medically wrong. I am very grateful for that! But I would still like to fix this and help her sleep. And of course me too :)
I've been reading about melatonin and even some doctors prescribing it to toddlers to help them sleep. But I have to admit I am a bit nervous about that. I wouldn't want to basically make my child depend on any kind of substance to sleep.....
I did however also read a lot about magnesium and how important it is for our bodies, that most of us suffer from magnesium deficiency and that it is very good for children. And most of all, that it helps with sleep problems. Suggested use is the magnesium oil that you can either rub on your skin (bottom of the feet for example) or you can put a couple of drops in the bath.... Have any of you heard anything about this, or maybe even tried? I would be also interested to hear if any of you have tried melatonin.
TIA!!!

Hi I actually read about the magnesium oil/lotion on wellness mama website. My almost three year old screams every night because she hates sleeping. She has been that way the whole time. Im going to try the magnesium oil/lotion this week. Haven't tried melatonin. Would do magnesium first. Another thing is a lot of exercise. Tire her out! Wake her up earlier in the morning so she sets her clock to another dozing time. I hope your situation gets better. I understand how it is to be without sleep. Ive been holding off on having another baby because of it!

I'm going to try magnesium oil with my 6 month old, and also start using it on myself (i breastfeed). I take pill form mag but i've read transdermal is the best.

any updates from the other mamas? did it help your LO?

I take a low-dose melatonin at night. It works for a couple of hours. It doesn't make me groggy the next day like other sleep aids.

Thanks Sonia!
Zoe does get plenty of exercise but she still can't settle down. Sometimes she even gets too excited after a fun filled day. I am checking with my doc on magnesium and melatonin. Would you mind responding here again when you have tried the magnesium oil? I'd love to hear how it went.
It's nice to know there is a support team out there and someone else who understands the situation. I hope it gets better for you and your LO.
And I know what you mean. My girl's sleep issues is one of the biggest reasons we are holding off on another baby, too. Good luck and I'm anxiously awaiting the results :)
