We just started speech therapy and he appears to understand most of what we are asking/saying but not using the words himself. He is reaching all other milestones normally but I know that some start 'talking' as early as 8 months! He was born premature (5 weeks early). Is anyone else in the same situation with this lack of speech? Or have you been in the same situation, concerned and then when did they start talking?

My son was 4 weeks early and was told around 2 years old was when he would pick up on words and thats what happened. Out of no where he was learning new words. He would babble and try to talk but nothing real good, he would make up words for things and now he is able to say a lot new words. I personally wouldn't worry, give it a few more months, maybe by the time he is 2 1/2 and if his amount of words doesn't increase then I would talk to someone.

Mine is in speech therapy to but he is 25 months old. They say the earlier you get them into it the better. He acts the same way. He can say about fifteen words now. he also can say a couple short sentences. We have been speech for three months. Have they told you what it might be from yet?

My four year old only started talking just before he turned three. I was told by the speech therapist that it was probably caused by the fact that he had two older brothers and they didnt let him get a word in. She also said its quite normal for children not to start talking until they are nearly two so as long as he is seeing a speech therapist I wouldnt be too concerned hes probably just lazy.

I was worried for a little bit that my son wasn't talking. He has a cousin who is 5 weeks older and she was talking more then he was but he got the hang of it. He is starting to put words together now and is doing real good with new words. I think it was at his 18 month check up was when I asked about his speech and sure enough out of no where new words. My favorite so far is "Stinky" which we use when he goes #2 hehe

His Dr hasnt said what its from but you have both been helpful and I feel a bit better. Ive been told that another day in childcare might help. He is only in one day a week so Im thinking about putting him in another day and giving one of his grandmother's a rest day
