Water is best definately. Be aware that a child needs to be drinking atleast a litre of fluids for ever 25 kilos of body weight. My little girl is 4 weighs 15.5 kilos and needs to drink atleast 700mls for her weight, keep in mind this is mainly water or that sort of thing. Kids need approx 300mls of milk a day also even at his age and also some other dairy as in yoghurt and that sort of thing. Excessive thirst is also yes a sign of diabetes, but if he is coping with the cut back i wouldnt worry to much about that. If he is still waking through the night he may have dry throat and need his tonsils checked over though just to rule it out. I would try running this all by a Pediatrician or child health nurse just for the sake of it and to set your mind at ease.

Please check with his pediatrician on the matter as well. Excessive thirst is a symptom of diabetes as well and needs to be ruled out. My own son had made drinking as he fell asleep a habit. I took away his bottle but he managed to use a sippy cup in the same manner to comfort himself to sleep. I broke the habit by making bedtime drinks available only in the kitchen. I changed his routine and the fussing was minimal. If your little one is waking up through the night for drinks check the temp in the room. If you are hot then he probably is as well. A humidifier may help as well. If there is moisture in the air he will be less likely to wake with a dry throat. Hope this helps!

My son's 26 months and pretty much had his cup day and night, luckily he's happy with juice and milk but still wakes in the early hours most nights for me to fill his cup. I think its more a case of habit than anything else so i've started making him wait a while in the day before i will refill it for him to try and wean him from waking in the night as just taking it away would be very distressing

If he wakes up that many times every night for a drink, I would talk to his doctor about that. It may be habbit, or it may be something else, but a doctor would probably have the best solution. Sorry I couldn't be any more help.
