Hi Lisa, many of us aint that lucky to have a baby that sleeps through the night, me being one of them. My almost 2yr old little boy never slept well at all at nights up until i invested some time to teach him to sleep and self soothe, but even now he wakes up in the middle of the nights for various reasons, some we cant control.

1. you need to teach yoru child to self soothe and sleep. This will take time and the earlier you teach them the better it is for you and them. The younger they are the less time u need to invest..If you have a look at in the forum section you can read up on how to teach your child to sleep..the three (single or combined) methods they use (depending on age) is shhh/pat, PU/PD (pick up / put down), WI/WO (walk in / walk out).

2. You need a set bedtime routine for your child. Dont get confused with the term routine and schedule. A routine is not like a scheduled meeting you would have at 10am in the morning! A bedtime routine doesn't have to start or need to be at exactly 7pm every night, but it does need to be consistant every night.

Kids and adults thrive on routine and knowing what comes nxt...

3. You need to just double check on yoru childs needs: ie..does he have a clean nappy?...he;s he well fed and had his last bottle/cup of milk and he doesnt go to bed he's room temperature comfortable and in conjunction to that is he dressed suitably for the condition (my little one sweats alot and i need to be careful not to over heat him but yet i need to make sure he's warm enough at nights too) he unwell or teething?...

4. You need to look at you daytime routine and what he dont expect your child to go down at 7pm if he has had 2hour nap from 3:30pm-5:30pm...high preservative foods and coloring can get them really hyper so avoid giving too much sugary foods what he watches on televisions becos by 1yrs of age studies have shown that babies can get night terrors and nightmares...You also need to be aware that night terrors and nightmares are different...When kids get nite terrors they usually cant remember of it the nxt morning and tends to happen in the deep most of the time they may seem awake but not (very important not to wake a child up when in this situation)...

I'm not sure if any of this is helpful, but its pays to check out the babywhisperers website...ur welcome to email me if u like...good luck!
