My 2yr. old refuses to eat ground beef :/

My son just turned 2 on Nov. 3rd, and ever since he was about 16-17 months old it's been a fight getting him to eat foods that have ground beef in them. When he eats "Hamburger Helper" he'll eat the noodles but not the meat, if we make sloopy joes he refuses to eat it. I know he needs the protien from the meat, but he's not getting it because he's not eating it. As far as we can tell he's lactose intolerant(he gets REALLY bad diarreah from dairy products) and that's it, no other problems. Is he just being a picky eater or something else wrong? Any advise would be GREAT.

I had worried about the same thing. my daughter refuses to eat most meat's, most of the time. When i asked our doctor, he said it was fine as long as she is getting protien from other things such as nuts and eggs.

Ground beef isn't essential for health by any stretch. As others have said there are many sources of protein. I wouldn't worry about it.

my boy now almost 5 hated to eat beef sausages or any beef really any which way - it was probably because ofthe taste and also sometimes it's a little hard for them to chew, i added with the gravey crushed tomato and tom paste. he slowly started eating it because i also added veggies but i purerad it so he had no clue now he'll eat sausages and mince but still finds all the rest a bit hard going-chew chew chew nothing comes from it. he's not being picky just not likeing the taste etc....

He can get protein from beans, peas, peanut butter and other sources as well. My 2 year old has never ate beef cause she just won't try it. The only meat she will eat is chicken.....Good luck!!!

hi, if he refuses it even when mixed into veggies/cereals/fruits (applesauce), then i would advise not to push a lot, try other types - chicken, turkey, rabbit, lamb, fish. If he refuses all types of meat - use other protein-containing food such as eggs, beans (lentils etc).

My 2 year-old daughter is only just starting to eat chicken (in nugget form). Other than that she would not swallow meat. She would swallow everything else in her mouth but the meat. 2 hours later we are digging it out of her mouth. She also will not drink milk or water. It took us forever to get her to use a sippy cup and not just chew on the spout. My thinking is that some kids just don't like some foods and eventually, this too will pass. We give her calcium gummies and other high-protein foods (Peanut butter, cheese, yogurt, and she is very healthy. Try not to worry too much... and just keep some alternatives on hand.

He doesn't need protein from meat. there are other sources of protein. we've done rice milk for our kids since they didn't like dairy at younger ages. My son is 20 months. we have no nut allergies, so as snacks we do pistachios, walnuts, pecans, etc. My kids also like to snack on hard boiled eggs. poultry, fish, beans...there are tons of sources not cow. Red meat really isn't that healthy anyway. I'd just offer it every now and then and he may take a liking to it later. My daughter is 4 and still hardly eats meat. But she eats so much other proteins, i don't worry.

He loves turkey and when we give him lactose-free or soy milk we don't have the diarreah problem that we have when we give him dairy products. My 10month old daughter doesn't have a eating small pieces of meat(she only has 2 teeth and more trying to cut through). I don't think it's a problem with fat because my mom usually tries to get the leaner ground beef.

It could be a fat problem. My husband and I both had that problem as kids and were thought to be lactose intolerant until we were given lower fat options.

Another reason for the refusal could be texture. Gound meat is a really weird one. Try turkey and see if he'll eat that. If he doesn't, it is most likely a textural thing.

I think he might be getting it from me because I perfer chicken and other white meats over red meats, but when I have no choice but to eat stuff with red meat in it(like when me and my kids are at my parents' house) I eat it and don't complain. One night when we were at my parents we fought with him for about half an hour to an hour just to eat a little bit of sloppy joes. Thanks for the suggestion, we'll be trying it soon :)

Have you tried ground turkey instead? My daughter isn't that picky but I know she loves turkey burgers. We also eat a lot of chicken in our house. Try just switching up meats to see if that helps. Maybe it's a flavor thing.
