Grace is 18 months and hates riding in the car. We take frequent long trips and I am out of ideas to keep her calm & occupied! We recently tried the portable dvd and that worked for about 2 minutes, we've tried books, special toys, snacks & music. All of these work for about 2 minutes and then watch out! She screams, cries, and smashes her head side to side in her carseat! Any suggestions????

This is a tough situation! I had same problem but thankfully she has gotten better! We just stopped taking her out for a while, I am lucky that I have a 16 yr old still at home so if hubby & I wanted a short time out to do shopping or go out to dinner I could leave her here with her sister to avoid the car meltdown. Its very hard to drive and deal with an out of control child! When we started taking her out again it was just short trips at first like to grocery store where she could ride in those car type carriages they have now, she loved that! Now we can pretty much go anywheres and she is fine. Just know it is only a passing phase she will outgrow. Good luck.........

My daughter was the same way when we drove at night.  What worked for us was buying a little battery operated lantern that I could hook to the head rest on the driver seat.  The light was low enough it didn't bug the driver but she was able to see things.  This of course won't help you if she cries during day trips (sorry)  But I will say with my daughter, I will only pick up a toy/book etc. a couple times if she is crying (they get rejected and thrown to the ground) If she refuses after a couple time, I stop picking up the items and tell her, "I'm sorry I can't do anything for you because you have to stay in your seat"  Most of the time she'll cry for a couple more minutes then she stops.  I'd like to think that she understand I can't cater to her in the car easily, but I'm sure it is just dumb luck :)

I hope you find something that works, because it is horribly sad when all you want to do is help, but everyone has to stay buckled!  Good luck.

Try her favorite music or a notebook and crayons. My daughter loved to draw at that age. (she still does). It also may be those long trips she may be tired of them and when ever she gets in the car even if your going around the corner she probably thinks she will be in there a while. If you can avoid being in a car that long maybe don't take so many long trips. Kids don't like sitting for a lond period of time. Also try scheduling your long trips around her naptime so she will sleep most of the way. Hope this helped

Maybe she has a fear of riding, My niece was like that also .By the time she turn 4 i think she was over it. It might of been 31|2 years old. My brother took my niece on a bus trip, not far(use the PTVA). She loved it. After awhile she got used to the car trips. Good luck.AmyDomaingue
