My youngest is 3 and to tell you the truth, she really didn't get a large vocabulary until she turned 2. ..The main things are to help him, teach him words and don't talk baby talk to him. He will get a large vocabulary when he is ready..and then when he talks like crazy, you can say why did I even worry...:)

You can talk to your doctor. My son is 3 and is in speech therapy. In Pennsylvania they have Early Intervention that will come to your house to evaluate your child and when they get  close to the age of 2 then it's the Capital Area Intermediate Unit that will do the evaluation. It's all free.

You could talk to his doctor and see if they suggest anything that you can do or refer you to someone who can help you out more. I was in speech until 8th for not being able to say my "R's" very well. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she started saying more words recently. Just ask your doctor.

I'd take him to get checked just in case. He may just be a little behind or like some in my family (including two of my kids) there might be something wrong. My brother had problems with his tongue and had to go to speech therapy until he was 4 and my two oldest had hearing problems.
