If he's tired or mad he will say shut up...he also likes to say it cause he thinks it's a game. I can't seem to get him to stop..he is 3 years old

My two year old is doing the same thing. He uses it out of context as a dirty name to call people. He will call you poo poo shut up when he is mad. The more I tell him to stop, the more he does it. He calmed it a little when we ignored it but watched to see if we were going to do anything to him. Maybe they just need to grow out of it. GOOD LUCK

Quoting Melissa:

I haven't had that issue with my girls yet but I remember when my parents had issues with my brother. When he would say something inappropriate like shut up they would take a small spray bottle filled with vinegar and give him a squirt in the mouth with it. They don't like the taste at all and it's not bad for them. give it a try, see if it works for you.

That might work on some kids but my kids actually DRINK VINIGAR! My husband will get a shot glass (we dont drink by the way) and put vinigar and salt in it and drink it. My kids have picked up on it lol. I hate it. I just wanted to share that after you said that it made me laugh!

I help babysit my 3 yr old Grandson and he does the same thing, it is so embarrassing:O( He will actually tell people to stop looking at him and to go away, etc.

And we call him "Mr. Grumpy" when he is like this and he tells us he is feeling grouchy, or grumpy.

And telling him to stop doing it, and that it's not nice just seems to make it worse!

My daughter use to do that. I would just tell her very sternly that it wasn't nice to say that. I stopped saying it also and in it's place I would say Please be quiet or hush please. She finally got it after a few weeks of me getting on to her and now she doesn't say it at all. She'll be 4 in February.

My son says it too and thats thanks to his Grandma...they tell there dogs to shut up..if he hears it he thinks its okay. my son started saying that and we just ignored him, and eventually he stopped..then the other time he heard his uncle say the S word and his dad put soap in his mouth a few times and he stopped saying it. maybe give him an alternative word also?
