I have a 22 month old son who is an only child. He has been talking for a while now, but he very rarely says "mom" or "dad". I know his hearing is ok cause he can say other words and try to repeat the ones he doesn't know. So do you think that there could be something wrong cause he won't say mom and dad like he should? Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Does he have other nick names that you call him by? Do you have other "pet" names that he addresses you with? If this is the case it could be as simple as him thinking when he addresses some one he loves it is not by their "real" name but by their "pet" names? I don't know? - just a thought...

Also i have heard and read from a few different sources now that during the first year or so of their learning to talk they go through phases of saying a word or two, even small sentences, over and over again to fully process it, the way it sounds, feels to say, & context. Once mastered they may completely discard them for a time, while moving on to the next language challenge. Its a perfectly normal part of their language development apparrantly. My 22 month old son does that very thing, althogh not so much with names of people, but each child would be different. Its probably nothing to be too concerned about for now. If it continued on to the point that it was distressing you simply bring it up with your fam gp next time your in. Good luck.
