Breastfed babies definitely need to feed at night a lot longer than formula fed (I've had both formula fed and breastfed babies).

My daughter stopped breastfeeding at night at 8 1/2 months. I'm sorry Rana but I have to disagree. I think that babies, especially under 12 months, wake at night because they are actually hungry and water should never be offered as a substitute to actual nutrition. Breastmilk does digest faster than formula and therefore, they get hungry.

My baby stopped night feeding at 3 months. It's harder to stop them when babies are breastfed. But you should start doing so by offering water or getting him back to sleep. They physically do not need nutrition during the night if they're eating well during the day.
