When is the best age to convert crib to toddler bed, and then when do you move from toddler bed to twin size bed?

My son is 16 months. He's 30 pounds, & 33 inches. He has NOT attempted to climb out of the crib YET, but I know he's more than capable because of all the stuff he DOES climb. So we converted the crib to a toddler bed today (we have a 4 in 1 crib). We are going to try it out, and see how it goes. I put a bed rail on it, so he don't roll out. And after he gets good at this bed but before we have another baby, we will switch him to a twin size bed.... Probably when he's around 2 or 3. (we are currently ttc, no luck so far). I kept the baby monitor in his room, so I'll hear him when he wakes up and his room is completely baby proofed. What do you all think??

Rebecca why would I wait until he's climbing out?? I don't want him to hurt himself....

Honestly, I would keep him in the crib as long as possible. Meaning until he starts trying to climb out.

my daughter is almost 14 months old. Im pregnant with my second they will be 21months apart when its born. Im planing on moving by daughter into her new room with a twin bed on the floor with bed rail on it before she turns 18 months. (as soon as i can clean out the office and set it up to be her room.) but i DEFFINANTLY going to put a babygate in her bedroom door so she can walk around the house in the middle of the night.

i think its a great idea. my daughter switched to a toddler bed and her own room all at 15 months. we switched her to a twin bed when she turned 2 and now she sleeps in a full size bed and she's going to be 3 in march. i got hell from a lot of ppl for it but if you think he's ready then hey you never know until you try.
