i am going through this with my 4yo and 2yo we try the rapid return technique which has gone on till midnight . Or the quickest way to get them to sleep is to sit in the room or do something in the room but with my back to them. they usually fall asleep then within 1/2 hour. but it doesn't matter what time they go to sleep they both wake multiple times through the night with my daughter i don't why. with my son i think it is that he is pain with an umbilical hernia that the docs keep saying is fine.

Your son may just be outgrowing naps early. He may also be at an age where he feels he will be missing something if he is asleep and everyone is awake. When we first converted our 2 year old to a big bed from a crib, we had trouble getting him adjusted to staying in bed. I bought railings for the twin bed, and put a gate across his bedroom door so that he can't get out. I have a few safe toys in his room so that even if he doesn't sleep, he can amuse himself and not get hurt. At first he would fall asleep in front of the gate, but eventually he would climb back into bed and fall asleep. Now he falls asleep almost immediately (bedtime is at 8:00) and sleeps until morning. We have a routine that we do every night : a prayer, brushing teeth, and song. Maybe a special blanket or toy in his bed to let him know it's time to sleep. The important thing is consistency and not giving in. It's ok for him to cry for a bit if he is not hurt, until he falls asleep. And by the way, my son is now 3 and has been sleeping in a bed for 8 months now.
