phone call panic

My kids panic when they hear the phone ring. It will even wake them out of a sound sleep. I can't turn of the ringer, so how can I convince them that it's ok?

I like Jennifer's idea. I think I'd sit down with them and call your home phone with a cell phone. Answer it yourself and ask to speak to one of your children, then tell them about what they're having for lunch that day or give them something to look forward to. I'd keep practicing until you can move out of the room when the phone rings. Also, when the phone rings and it's NOT you calling, get them excited like "it's Grandma!" I don't know if it will work, but that's what I would do.

Maybe you could move the phone to another jack so it doesn't wake them up or place a jersey or something over it so you can still hear it ring but it won't wake them.

Does your phone have the option for different ring tones? My phone plays music when it rings. Have grandma or someone else call the children on the phone and if you have speaker phone you can all talk to them together. Teach them what phones are for and maybe play with toy phones. Pretend they are ringing and talk to the "person" on the other end. Keep reassuring them that's it's okay and nothing to be afraid of. My son use to be afraid to talk on the phone. I think hearing the voice without seeing the person freaked him out. He's over that now and loves to talk on the phone. It just took time and reassurance.
