picky eater

Is it normal for a two year old to eat only, hotdogs, chicken nuggets/tenders, meatballs, mac and cheese, scalloped potatoes, pretzels and chips.

Haha! Toddlers can be really funny about food. It is normal for 2 year olds to want to only eat those foods, but that doesn't mean we have to let them win. Hehe. As long as your child doesn't have any health issues, it is okay to offer the child the same food everyone else is eating. If they don't eat, then they can wait until the next meal or snack. If they get hungry before then, offer up what was served earlier. Toddlers love choices, so you can always give them one thing to choose at meal times or something like that. It won't be easy at first, but kiddos get the hang of it and they will broaden their food choices. I've done this with all 6 of mine, and they eventually start liking foods that they never would have thought they would. My oldest 3 will eat just about anything now.

Ah Yes, they can be very picky eaters!
You’ll need to start slowly and be patient.

At home, try a single pea, part of a noodle, or a crumble of cheese and encourage them whilst they’re trying it. Kind of "bribing" :), you can follow up by giving them something they really like. Then, at subsequent meals, increase the portion of the new food and phase out the follow-up food.
Also scale back on snacks and drinks and don't give them too many options- For example, Don’t ask “what would you like to eat?’

Also, let them help prepare the meal with you and eat something and give them to try.

Two year olds are notoriously picky eaters. It will seem at times like they survive on next to nothing. However, given the choice of eat or starve? They will eat what is given to them. The food you describe are high in artificial ingredients, preservatives and calories and not much in the way of vitamins and nutrients. Try offering fruit and veggies at each meal and at snack time, and healthy options for main dishes. You can offer small servings of the foods he prefers while he adjusts to new tastes and textures. You can expect him to resist change; toddlers can't control much but they can control what they eat! When he gets hungry enough he will eat what you give him and develop a more balanced palate.
