My daughter is 18 months old and is an only child. Should I put her in a playschool or just a playgroup?

Playgroups are good if you want to teach your child how to socialize with other kids. (a great idea for 18months)
Playschool is good if you want to teach your child begining skills they will need for school. (they are more lesson focused and structured)
either way you need to look at their school their daily routines/proceedures and decide is this right for my child. You may place them in a program and find that they are not happy and need to make a change.

Depends on what you want for your child. A play group tends to be unstructured and very relaxed.
A preschool will be more structured and follow a daily routine and have a few set activities they will strive to complete through the day that are generally related to a weekly or monthly theme.

When choosing a preschool, take care to ask about activities planned, look closely at the variety of toys available, ask if there are other toys (for rotating every so often to keep things fresh), what kind of art activities they do, is there sensory activities (water or sand or play dough), what does the outside play yard look like? (Avoid anything that is a concrete/asphalt slab). Do the children look happy? Do the staff look happy?
Ask about staff turn over rate, if they change staff frequently AVOID that center like the plague. Any center or preschool that has a high staff turn over rate is a bad place to leave your child.
I speak as an early childhood educator who has worked in centers for 6 years and in home child care setting for 4 years.
Look at the cleanliness of the classroom etc. Look at the lunch menu if that applies. You want healthy food not crappy cheap food.
Always, always trust your gut.
You know your child best so go with what you think would best suit your child at this time.

If you are not able to find playgroups I think playschool is just fine.. I will be putting my son at 15 mths in Mother's day out 2 days a week but only at a place I know several other mother's. Good Luck

Playgroup is lots of fun and is what I have done with my children. I wouldn't leave a child in a school setting until they are able to communicate and able to let you know what happens in their day. It's hard to leave them places when you don't know what's going on.
