he doesn't go to bed til eleven or midnight. if he does fall asleep early, he will wake up in an hour and act like it was just a nap

I have the same problem... I have tried everything, different routines etc... But Ethan still does exactly what your son does. The only thing that I do find helps a bit, if I am only on my own with him (limited over stimulation), after he wakes up, sitting on a chair in the lounge with the TV off and holding him playing with his hands (calms him down) He then will go to sleep about 10pm!

You can try giving him a nap early in the morning. I have noticed with my son Jordan who is 22 months old that if he doesn't have a nap during the day by 7 - 7:30 he is ready to go to sleep but he wakes up an hour or two later. I give him a nice warm bath and then a warm bottle with cereal and lay him down in his crib and when he is done with his bottle give him his pacifier and he usually knocks out. He wakes up around 7:30 in the morning sometimes 8, takes a nap around 10:30 or 11 for about 2 hours then goes to sleep around 8:30.
