My fiance and I are both cooks and my 29 month old son loves all food. I can get him to eat curried rice and he loves it...he loves steak, fish and poultry, and all the veggies in between. The only problem is...is that he will chew and chew and chew his food...keep it in his mouth, suck out all the juices and then proceed to give me the dried up mush that once was food...or...if we cut everything up really small...he wont even bother to chew...he'll just swallow everything whole....we've tried everything we can think of... can anyone help me out?????

He does not look unhealthy to me. He eats when he gets hungry. It is his way of having his own control in his life. With a mom that is a control freak, even though you have all great intentions; he needs to feel like he has some control too. The handing you back the chewed up food (mush), well that is what you did to your mom too and it is his way of controlling you. Allowing him to have some control of his behavior teachs him to be responsible. For example: when he tries to hand you the chewed up food (don't take it, tell him nicely that "he can" go throw it out). He has to take care of the consequences of his behavior. Telling him what "he can do" reassures his confidence. Since at "two" we parents find yourselves telling the two year olds things they can't do and we forget to show and tell them all they can do as well. Usually we forget because we have become frustrated with trying to control our children. Don't worry so much you are a great mom...he will eat what he wants when he wants to...Stop pressuring YOURSELF. relax. love you

well im thinking that ur lucky that ur child is chewing his food!! my second child, didnt like to chew any food!!! she would swallow everything whole( she would swallow whole slices of anything peaches alpples meat I mean evreything) she gave me many heart attacks choking down her food.. If ur son is chewing up the food at least he is getting most of the nutrience out of it before he hands it back to u.. I also aree with ur mom have him put it either on the side of his own plate or something like that.. he probably likes to see ur reaction to his chewed up mush

my son does that now and then, with meat if he trys it at all. it makes me wonder if he is afraid of choking. but he gets all the "goods" by chewing and getting all the juices and such out.

I wish I had an answer for you. My sone is 21 month and he often does this. It doesn't seem to have rhyme or reason, sometimes he swallows his food sometimes he doesn't. I guess we just have to be patient and wait for the phase to end.

listen to your mom, she's a GENIUS! Also, I'm laughing because they say everything you do comes back on you when you have kids...I guess it's true!

Quoting Teresa:

So is that your mom? lol. Our 22 month old daughter does the same thing. I'm hoping it's just a phase and that it ends soon. She doesn't do it all the time and is still healthy, but it still sucks. :)

yes I am the mom :) and very proud of my daughter she's a good mommy

It's probably a texture thing. my son does this with stuff like chicken and roast beef. Even if it's cut up small, he sucks on it a while and then spits it out. Just keep feeding him what he likes. He will eventually figure out how to chew AND swallow the more textured foods. and KUDOS on you guys for letting him eat what he likes. I am a firm believer that you shouldn't fix s.th different for your kids than what you eat, it makes them picky eaters. My kids are well aware that they get what's for dinner and nothing else and both of my kids are pretty good eaters. they are willing to try new foods and will give most things a few chances. Good luck and I'm sure he'll outgrow this stage as soon as he figures out how to swallow the foods once they're chewed lol
