Toddler Anger Issues, how to cope...?

Lexi ( just turned 3) has been having tantrums lately when she gets mad and screaming at people or swinging to hit people. I've been telling her its ok to be mad, but it's not ok to scream or hit people, so I'm trying to teach her healthier alternatives. the only thing I came up with though is hitting a pillow to "get the mad out" any one have any better suggestions or success stories in teaching their tots how to deal with anger?

My 22 mo old daughter has a bad temper, she started hitting me as well.. i did not stand for it for 2 seconds.. I put her in the laundry room while she yelled for 5 minutes and did not let her out until she calmed down. Now all i need to do is threaten that and she puts her hands down. they are smart little creatures.. now when she gets mad.. i either completely ignore the temper tantrum or ask her to go to time out.. she actually puts herself there now on her own which is exactly what i wanted.. she needed to learn how to self soothe. good luck.
