We were going to use my brother's old twin, but we found a toddler bed at a garage sale and decided to start with that - the bedroom is small and she's very small for a 2.5 yr old. She loves it. Stays in it all night, doesn't fall out, her toddler fitted sheets still work (although I did get her a couple toddler sheet sets with characters on them, as part of moving to the new bed). But there's no reason you can't go straight to a twin, if you think that would work better.

I'm on week one of a toddler bed transition with my 2 and half year old. So, I agree with you Claire 'not loving it' either.

Hmmm, think he was up 4 times last night...it's a blur.

I think it's a nice option to have between a crib and twin bed. We converted our daughter in to a toddler bed at 12 months...she simply wasn't sleeping well in her crib anymore, but a twin bed wasn't an option. She's 18 months now and loves having her own sized furniture to climb in and out of by herself, and I love not having to fight with her for hours every night to fall asleep.

My 1 yrs old daughter hates her crib so we decide to sleep her on a single bed since she was 7 months old.  We lower the bed, the frame is just 2 cm above the ground and taught her how to crawl down the bed.  She picked it up quickly.  Until now she still sleeps on her own bed and she can walk to our bedrooms by herself if she gets up in the morning bringing her pillow or her water cup with a big smile on her face.

Thanks for posting ... I had these same questions. We just bought a toddler bed for our almost 2 1/2 year old. Getting ready to make the transition and nervous about the ability to get up and "roam".

We moved my son who will be 2 later this month to a toddler bed a few weeks ago. I needed the crib for his little brother. He only gets out of it a few time before he falls asleep. Our trick was to put a baby gate in the door way. When he gets up he can't leave his room and sees we are not around and lays back down. Anpther tricl is we don't have any toys or books in his room. This prevents him from getting up and playing with them. After he falls asleep we remove the gate so in the morning he can get into our bedroom.

I think they are silly. I put my son in a single be when he was 22 months old, and have never had a problem. His bed had the abilty to lower the mattress, so it is not so high at first.

I think they are great. the transition from the crib to a bed isn't too scary because in some cases, they are still in the bed they've been in. I don't like how they can get in and out on their own free will, but I guess it could be taken as a lesson in independence and part of becoming a big boy.
