Hi,

My son is 3 years old and I have been trying to toilet train him. He tells me when he does a poo. He like wearing his pull up and his underpants. It is all going fine until it comes time to sit on the potty or the toilet. When you get him on them he does nothing but scream and cry. I don't know what I am doing wrong but he appears to be afraid of them. I have tried to encourage him by praising, taking books to read to him why he is sitting there or his favorite toy. But nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me please or can you suggest anything to help him get over it?

Cheerios work the same way as the paper targets and its way cheeper. Just a thought. Good luck

I am not sure if it would help or not... but have you seen those 'toilet targets'? They are a disposable paper target and you put them in the loo. Your child then tries to hit the target with their piddle or poop (NIIIIICE). They worked a treat with my son as all he could think about was hitting that target... Not about the daunting fact that he had to sit on the toilet! I also found bribery worked :)

Thanks, I had a little progress he asked to sit on the toilet last night. After I court him unrolling the toilet roll. It only lasted for 2 seconds before he started screaming. But it was better than nothing. It was a big step for him to ask.

I hate to say it, but you may just have to wait it out. When my son was 3 I tried everything to get him to use the potty as well. Then one day he went to the bathroom and sat on the potty and just went. He has been going ever since with no accidents.

Yes I tried putting it in the lounge room so he could watch his favorite DVD and in his bedroom. But no luck with either of them. Thanks for trying to help

Have you tried putting the potty somewhere other than the bathroom? You can put a towel down on the floor and put the potty just about anywhere. If that works then you can eventually move it back into the bathroom after he gets used to it.
