What is the going rate for babysitters?

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

I am home all day with my two small children and want to make some extra money. I am thinking of babysitting but do not know what people charge. Is it by the day or by the hour or both?

I live in Virginia and have been paid as much as $50.00 or $60.00 a day or $10.00/hr. I pay our sitter (a teenage girl) $8.00/hr. and college students ask for as much as $12.00/hr. Call your area daycare centers and ask what their weekly rates are for the different age groups. It gives you an idea of where to start.

I run a dayhome in Calgary, Alberta. I charge $35 per day (all meals and snacks included) up to a max of $650 per month.

Not sure where you are so its hard to guess.

I know that here (in Northern Ireland) you need to be registered with a childminding authority before you can look after kids, they will look at your house and tell you how many kids you can look after.

I send Laura to nursery 2 days a week so I can get some work done (self employed) and so she has some kids to play with, they charge by the morning, afternoon, day or week. I pay £35 a day
