My son has just turned 18months, and he does not say a lot of words. He can say bye, mama, dada and baba but nothing more than that. He talks in his own little language, but not really proper words. Does anybody know when they start saying more words and putting sentences together?

Might sound silly but I am getting a bit worried. Thanks

I was in the exact same situation as your are in about 6 months ago.  I took my son to see a speech therapist who to be honest thought I was a bit mad.  My mistake had been comparing my son to my daughter who at 18 months was chatting away.  I also compared him to other children his own age and started panicing.  The therapist did one session with him and she showed me a few tricks and now at aged 2 I can't shut him up.  He spoke when he was ready to.  The most valuable tip she gave me was to never say "can you say.........?" or "say........."  She said point to an item, maybe a ball and say "ball" then pause for 5 seconds, say it again, pause again and then say it once more.  If he doesn't attempt to say the word, then move on to another.  Make it fun.  Hope this helps.  Certainly helped me.
