my son just turned one and his naps are becoming pretty scheduled now that morning naps are gone, but some odd days he refuses to sleep until hes been awake like 8 hours or more(i usually keep him up about 4-6 before his nap normally) and this is after several attempts to lay him down, insuing in a fit...five minutes of silence, and then playing in his crib until he hears me again. im currently a stay at home mom and i enjoy being able to keep his schedule more structured than it was when i was working a lot. am i laying him down too soon? maybe hes supposed to be up a lot longer and im just not giving him the opportunity??today he had this like...super nasty man fit and then just passed out after a while of it. when does it end! just go to sleep lil man!

i had this problem with my daughter she would want to sleep to late in the afternoon that she wouldn't sleep til very late at night i tried two ways they both worked but have differant stresses the hardest was not to put them down for a nap she would wake arould 6-7 in the morning and come around 3-4 she was tired so i would keep her awake the extre 3- 31/2 hours and put her to bed slightly earlier. to keep her up i would play out side and in wealther like we have got, in a paddling pool as the cooler water woke her up its stressful because they can become very cranky but worth a go and it gets easier.

the second way was to get up earlier in the morning so that nap time was earlier in the morning but this ment getting up at around 4.30 - 5 but she would go down for a nap around 12. i found this hard ias it makes you more tired.

it all depends on what time your son wakes and sleeps as to which might be best.

i hope i might have given you some ideas all the best with it good luck xx

Sounds like he is too busy working on a new skill to worry about sleeping. Kids will often fight sleep when they are working on mastering something. Both of my sons went through phases. My best advice is to stick to a routine and when they won't sleep just be flexible. When my 14mon old won't sleep we just do something else until I can tell that he is tired and ready. Sometimes he will be up for 3 hrs before a nap and sometimes 8hrs. I go with the flow so that I don't drive myself crazy!
