My son is 18 months old now and I still can't get him to walk. I can occasionally get him to take a few steps on his own, and he will walk if i he holds my hands, but as soon as i let go, he drops to his knees and starts crawling. I am being told that at his age, he may be labeled with a learning disablitly because of it. This worries me, but I dont know what else to try. Any suggestions???

My son didnt walk until he was nearly 18mths either....he would drop to the ground as well we took him to a podiatrist (foot specialist) we were told that he had feet the size of a 3yo & his hips were double jointed & had "Flat feet" we got special soles put into his shoes and 2 weeks later he was walking & running!! He wore them for 6 months & he has had no problems since.....It may be nothin but i felt I would be told somethin terrible is wrong with my child so I held off out of nervousness when really it had to do with his feet/hips as they say it never hurts to get them checked out Good Luck!!

Dont let it get you down to much, every child is different,my first walked at 9 mnths,my second at 16 mnths, and my third is only 4mnths but im sure she has her own ideas when she will do it all.
i got very frustrated with everyone telling something must be wrong when she only learnt to crawl a month earlier and everyone else who had a child her age,was UP and about.
He is having no worries getting around on his fours by the sounds of things,he most likely wont walk long before he learns to run and you wont even notice he took so long.
Besides we cant wait for them to walk and talk so we can tell them to sit down and be quiet.LOL

All the best!

I would ask your pedi if they think you should see a specialist. I have heard many stories of kids walking tihs late, my cousin had a 20 mo. old also, and that child is perfectly fine now. So it could def. be fine, but if by chance it were an issue, the eariler you get intervention the more likely you are for a full "recovery" and potential no issues later on.

my daughter is now 2 (as of aug 30th this past year),and she was a very late walker as well, she didnt start walkin until about may of the past year,so she was about 20 months give or take. i had the same worries that you do,but she was fine, and walks and runs normal now,she has no problems at all,and is normal as any other kid her age, with her strong points and her weaknesses. i wouldnt worry that much, he will take off soon, thats how my daughter did, once she started, it was jus like she had been walkin for months.its hard to remember the excact moment when she started though,it just happened. i know how you feel, and how worried you are,but since he is taking a few steps and is walkin with your help, (which mine didnt really do at all!),then he is doin better than my daughter did at his age! all kids learn and do things in their own time and way,and even though he is a little behind, just as mine was, i really dont think there is a problem, just keepin working with him,and one day soon he will be walkin onhis own!!!

Try using a pushing walker, it really helps them to develop the skills on their own without aid, and they will eventually learn to ease themselves off. Hope this helps a little.
