Rice Cereal

[deleted account] ( 7 moms have responded )

So my twin girls are almost 3months old.
I was wondering when you start them on rice cereal?
WIC said 6months but doctor said, "if the girls are doing good, then 4 months"
any thoughts????

It is up to you ultimately, you know them best and can read their cues. Our doc said anywhere between 4-6 months, but we just waited until they showed interest. They started really studying us while we were eating or drinking. Around 5-5 1/2 months we tested them by putting an empty spoon to their mouths. My son opened up by my daughter was annoyed. They kept up their interest in watching us, so just before six months we started cereal and my son was thrilled and did so well. My daughter just pushed it out with her tongue, so whenever we fed my son we always made an attempt with my daughter, but she didn't really catch on for a few weeks. Have fun and have patience! : )

I started mine on rice cereal at 2 weeks by doctors orders cause they were not gaining weight they had both lost 1 pound! You are their mom and you know whats best for your babies start them when you think they need to be started expecially if they are not acting satisfied.

I introduced it at 5 months, but they didn't really start eating it well until about 6. It doesn't hurt to introduce it and then they'll let you know when they are ready to really start eating it as part of their diet. I think a little at a time helps their bodies get used to it. When they first start eating it a lot, it causes constipation in most kids. :)

I've started writing a blog for mothers of twins. Check it out:

if they have been healthy and all then 4 months is when a lot of moms want to start. if they have had any complications (for instance, my twins were intubated and had digestive and esophagus problems when they were born so we couldn't start them on food until they were 7 months old) then you will wanna wait. the best thing to do is listen to the doctor though because their doctor knows them better than WIC.

If I remember correctly, I started mine at 4 months. They did fine with it, and I only gave them a little bit to start. And I started them with the spoon, and they did fine. WIC says six months because thats when they start giving it to you on your checks.

It comes down to you. Do you think they are ready? I didn't start my girls on solids until almost 6 months and they were full term and very healthy. I figured if they are doing well on breastmilk and formula why add cereal. There really is no reason to rush. If you think it will benefit them and they are ready go ahead and start them on cereal. You can always try it and stop if it doesn't work very well. Sometimes a little cereal at bedtime can help them sleep longer or through the night.
