It will be a tough task. He is used to sleeping with you and his ability to fall back to sleep is associated with being in your bed. If you can get him to go down in his own bed, if he wakes I'd not bring him into your bed but rather rock him, rub his back or even let him cry (which is hard). Learning to fall asleep in his own bed and return to sleep when he rouses during the night is a skill he will learn with practice, patience and time. When you decide to transition him you have to stick with it and not flip-flop back and forth between his bed and your bed. Kids are smart and if he learns to fuss long enough to get his way; you will really have a battle.
Have you tried it yet? If so how did it go? If you have not tried it, are you putting him in a crib or a bed? Maybe put a sheet decorated with something he really likes on the mattress and set up a night-light and talk about how great it will be to be a big boy in his own bed. The more you can make it about him the more likely he will try it. Good Luck!
