My son is teething and although he has most of his teeth now ( a couple of molars left to come through)
he will barely eat anything, it is as if his appetite has completely gone, he has the odd piece of banana and some grapes along with one or two baby bells but if you show him a plate, fork or spoon he goes crazy.
We went to the doctor for a check up and he is underweight, they told us to feed him any old junk just to get his weight up but I feel really bad giving him chocolate and ice cream which are some of the only things he will entertain. Do I just wait it out and try and fatten him up with junk?

My son has been going through the same phase!!! He is 20 months old and is also teething, but has a lot of his teeth and molars already in. Some days he eats really well, most days he just picks at his food and spits most of it out. I just write it off as a phase that he is going through and figure that if he gets really hungry, he will eat and that there is no sense in forcing him to eat. And I especially don't want to get him into the bad habit of constantly wanting to eat junk food!! Hang in there, I'm sure these picky eaters will soon come around and want to eat every thing in sight!!!

my son is underweight as well. i was underweight as a baby. i know many children who are "under weight". in fact, i think i know more "underweight" children than "normal" children, especially in this age group. i think every kid goes thru stages where they will be underweight. as long as he is not malnutritioned because of it then i would not take drastic measures like feeding him a bunch of junk food. i would get a second oppioion from another doc. something just doesn't seem right about a doctor encouraging you to feed your baby junk food. as long as he is HEALTHY his weight isn't that big of a deal. getting him "fatter" on unhealthy food is worse for him than being a little underweight. don't you agree? just trust your gut and pay attention to his health, not his weight.
also, maybe try V-8 Fusion juice. it has a full serving of fruits and a full serving of veggies in every 8 oz's. that way if he doesn't want to eat, you can rest assured that he is still getting valuable nutrients! (:
i hope this helped! (:

My daughter is 8yrs old now but when she was that age she was the same as your little one. It's hard to see them not wanting to eat but remember there stomach is the size of their fist and what you think is too little is just right for him to fill him up. As far as giving him healthy food try those shakes that have alot of protine. They will fill him up with the good stuff but remember he might eat and drink even less b/c those are very filling. As long as he is not constpated and has a bowl movement he is doing in my book. I know it's hard to see your kid not eat but just so you know they do out grow it. Good luck and be strong!!!
