20 months and not talking.....getting a little worried!

My daughter is 20 months old. will be 21 months on the 22nd. She only says dad, daddy, mom, mommy, cheese, eat, and a few other little words. She can tell me what most animals says or does (not real clear all the time). But it seems like she knows exactly what im saying to her. She will go get something I tell her to and actually knows alot, but not talking. She points at everything and makes noises. She is actually very smart but im worried because she isnt talking. She has been early learner most of the time. She started walking 4 days after she turned 8 months. Anyone else having this problem?

My daughter was the same at that age (well, fewer words really) and now a year later she is a little chatterbox with advanced verbal skills. It's most likely she just hasn't started her word explosion yet. Some kids take longer and then one day they just start saying about 10-20 new words a day. haha. Seriously, my kid went from having about 5 words to speaking full sentences in a matter of two months.

We did see a speech therapist to make sure, but she didn't turn out to have any problem at all. So that's a route you can take if you are worried, but in all likelihood there is nothing wrong.

Feel free to speak to you doctor or contact birth to three and have then come do an assessment. We had one done on my daughter when my daughter was 19 months and althoughshe spoke only two words they scored her above average for language development because she is able to communicate her needs and understands complex direction. She will be two next month and still doesn't say as many words as your daughter but she is starting to try and speak more and we've taught her lots of signs to help her communicate more. I'll befollowing up with her doctor but I believe that one day she's just going to wake up and start talking.

My daughter is the complete opposite of her brother who at this point was speaking sentences. My daughter was a late walker but her motor skills are still so much better then her brothers, so really every child is different. If you are really concerned speak to her doctor for an evaluation or referral.

If you're concerned, by all means talk to your doctor...But if it makes you feel any better my son barely said anything (aside from mommy, daddy and a few others and all the animal noises) until he was about 22 months old. It was like a switch flipped one day and suddenly we couldn't shut him up :) Now he is 26 months old and his vocabulary is easily 300-400 words and he can count to 10 on his own. He was very advanced when it came to physical stuff but the vocal stuff just took him a bit longer.

Maybe speak to your doctor about getting a referral to a speech therapist, if there are problems early intervention is your best choice.
