4 weeks old and staying awake at night for several hours

My son is 4 weeks old and was born 3 weeks early. He would only wake up twice during the night for the first couple of weeks. Now it seems that he has completely gotten his days and nights mixed up. He sleeps the majority of the day and starts out good at night but then wakes up around 1 or 2 and won't go back to sleep until around 5 or 6. We basically go through our list of things we know to do such as feeding, changing, talking, singing, swinging, rocking, in his car seat on the the dryer, crib, bassinet, gripe water (hates the taste), etc. We can't get him back to sleep no matter what we do and he is so fussy. How do we break this nightly routine?

Hello Jennifer. I went through a similar situation with my first child and now have a three week old. This is pretty much normal, unfortunately. It will get better as he gets older. I'm finding it less difficult with my second child as I've changed my attitude about it. Instead of laying down praying for sleep, I lay down and literally tell myself, "I'll take what rest I can get even if its only 30 seconds" and it makes for a less frustrating night. Good luck to you!

A 4 week old is supposed to feed every 3 hours, if they are sleeping wake them up to feed. He shouldn't be sleeping that much. He is probably very hungry.

And they are going to wake every 3-4 hours to feed. That's insane for a 4 week old to sleep that much.

I know this is probably your first? Be prepared to lose A LOT of sleep for the first few months.

****Edit to add, I just googled and apparently this isn't abnormal for him to sleep so much.
