6 Month old with black, odd smelling poo

[deleted account] ( 5 moms have responded )

My daughter is 6 months old and her poo is becoming quite disturbing to me. It is almost black in color...almost blue like with black specs...which I know is iron....but it also has a smell, if I were to describe it best would be a combination of H2s and mothballs...terrible. Now I thought that maybe her iron stores may just be higher than some and that is how she is digesting it and that eventually her body would work out whatever is going on....she is bottle fed and is eating cereals and baby food....I have just switched her formula and will see what happens this week....forgot to mention she is also quite constipated, which that I know how to fix, just may be another symptom to add with the others, that Iam worried about most.....So I was wondering foremost if anyone else is going or has went through the same as I and what the verdict was for them and/or what wise advise may you have for this situation...We do have an appointment book for this week and planned on bringing a sample in, wouldnt mind hearing other opinions aswell.

Black poo can be a sign of internal bleeding. I would call the doctor and have your child seen as soon as you can!

Well it turns out that she is really backed up with poo...if she were to have internal problems there should be other signs, like a fever for one and probably not a very happy baby. Which she is and no fever, ever. So....Ive been informed that after sometime of poo being backed up, it gets really colorful and smells awful. So, I have been helping her along with a stool softener, just for a couple of days, as she hasnt had a poo in almost 4 days....and I have also changed her formula. I really hope that is the problem, dont imagine its much more, she seems to be fine, just doesnt have very nice poo.....thanks all!

Black in the stool is a sign of internal bleeding esp. with the foul odor. I would have to call the nurse at the pediatricians office and explain to her. They may want to see the baby before your scheduled appoitment. Please keep us posted. Prayers!

Some black stool is from iron, but the odd smell isn't typical. You should ask her doctor about it (honestly, bring a soiled diaper to the appointment if you can in a baggie). Also address the constipation.

well my 5 month old son sometimes gets constipated. I tried prunes but that only works once. i also got him whole wheat cereal with fiber. after about a week he was back to normal and going regularly. but i would sugest telling her pediatrician about that.
