6 year old excessive tantrums

1 minute she's fine and the next she's not. It is so scary how her emotions can go from calm and cool to the simplest things setting her off. For example she wanted to go to a friends house and when I told her her friend wasn't home she had an extreme meltdown. This has been ongoing for about a year. We did go to counseling and she is on 10 milligrams of Prozac. She was doing pretty well and her psychiatric nurse practitioner actually took her off the Prozac how month later it was so much worse we put her back on. I thought for a while she was doing well. I can't get to the bottom of whether or not these behaviors are normal and it's a matter of punishment, or if it is something clinical that needs more attention. I know my discipline can stand to be more consistent but these meltdowns if they happen in public are completely disastrous. Does anyone have experience with this? Can anyone give me tips or even just say that it is a phase she will outgrow.
