8 yr old daughter a year behind in school

I am looking for some advice for my daughter she is 8 years old and in 2nd grade, she is struggling very badly. Her teacher called me last week to get some approval for an intervention with the principal and other teachers. She said we need to figure out if she is so far behind because she doesn't understand what they are telling her or because she can't focus. ADD and ADHD run in the family and for some reason medicating her is one of my biggest fears. We have had a rough life and stability has become very rough for us. I work 2 jobs and she tends to be somewhere other than home at least 3 evenings a week, whether it be with friends or family. Having them sit and work with her on homework is very difficult, one reason being she is not easy to work with and 2 that I cant expect them to do so much when I am grateful enough that they can help so I can work. I just want some advice as to what I can do to make her feel secure and safe while helping her improve in school. What can I do?

I am going to be honest with you the instability in her life is making things harder for her. Add and ADHD children need things to be consistent everywhere that they go so that they know what to expect. Though you don't like the idea of medicating in your situation that may be the only way for you to deal with it. However there are diets and vitamin supplements out there that are supposed to help children with mild cases of both of these issues.
