9 Month old having night terrors??

My daughter is 9 months old and last night she started screaming in her sleep (painful, scary screams). I tried to calm her down but couldn't until after I had woken her up. This is about the 4th time she has done this. She is dead asleep while she is screaming and crying like this and it is SO scary. Are they night terrors? If so, are you supposed to wake them up or do you try to calm them while they are sleeping? Does any one else have this with thier child? It is just so scary as a mother to not be able to sooth their own child. :( I would love to hear from others on how this is handle with other people!

My son has done this a few of times as well. I make sure that he isn't hungry or needing a diaper change or anything else like that. All it had been was he was having a bad dream. About the only thing you can really do when that happens is to pick them up gently and talk in a low calm voice to reassure them. Usually they will wake up once they feel you pick them up or talk to them and calm down. I know for me the first time was so very scary and it took me a good 30 minutes just to get him calmed down and back to sleep. You can also talk to the doctor about it if it concerns you to much and see what the doctor says.
