my brother has had it since he was a kid. It is usually caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medications that are used for it are not good for the kids. They have a lot of negative side effects, decrease creativity and change the child's personality. Some kids have stated they do not feel like themselves while they're on the meds, like they are trapped inside themselves. They can also become depressed and withdrawn.
My mom would use more natural stimulants to balance the hyperactivity and help with focus. Caffeine would work well, which isn't the best but is a lot better than the medications. I suggest researching natural ways you can help him and work with him as much as you can at home. You could work on a different thing for short amounts of time and gradually increase the time. You can do this in all areas he is having trouble in. There may be a way of teaching he responds to better than others.
