Advice on a returned absentee father and step-dad please.

My ex and I broke up and he decided to walk away from my son when he was about 16 months old. I met someone when he was 18 months and has been "Daddy" ever since. He is 5 now, 6 next month.
Just recently, my ex has decided that he wants to be a part of his life. I let him come every second weekend for two supervised hours until my son gets to know him and my ex can prove to me that he can be consistent and not walk away. (I have given him chances in the past) So my question is: How would you explain this to your child? I guess I made the mistake of never telling him in the past but I thought I was protecting my son by not telling him that his father walked away from him and he has such a wonderful relationship with his step-father. They are two peas in a pod those two.

You need to tell your boy the truth. Use terms a six year old can understand. Also remind him that his step father ( you married?) will love him the same. You also need to get custody set too. Get visitation and support also set up from his bio dad. You should have done the custody a long time ago.
