Are These Types of Arguments Normal?

All throughout my life growing up and even today, whenever my parents argued it was/is a matter of screaming in each other's faces for up to 45 minutes, endless cussing, and often things being knocked over and/or holes in the wall. To be honest, I've always thought it was more my mother's fault than my father's. She's the type of woman who will literally get in your face and just keep pressing and pressing your buttons as hard as she can to completely break you down, and then shame you for when you inevitably respond with violence. She's honestly lucky he hasn't hit her yet because I would have.

So I've just always wondered, do all parents argue like this? Is it "normal" by any means? I've always wanted to ask my friends if their parents argue in the same manner but I've always been too embarrassed.

No. That is not normal at all... or healthy.... and I don't think it is healthy for you to place the blame more on either one of them or say that if you were in that position you would hit the woman (either gender hitting is 100% unacceptable for any reason whatsoever). I urge you to seek counseling before you ever think of having a relationship.

Every family is different so I won't say "normal" or not. I am a grown woman with kids of my own. I saw my parents argue one time. One time. I will never forget it because I was sure they would get a divorce over that one fight. I am sure they argued much more than that but never in front of us kids. My hubby and I are careful to keep out disagreements private as well. I talk to kids everyday who describe how mom hits dad and vice versa. If you are a young person and you feel scared for your parents, go to a teacher or school nurse with your concerns. Mom and Dad may not realize how much it bothers you.
